Exhibition Opening: Breathing
Curator: Ronit Reik
The exhibition seeks to look at our breathing space in these challenging times when we have been forced to stop abruptly in mid-life. The movement of the breath, which is a necessary condition for our existence, is soft, transparent, and hidden from the eye. It is always present, flowing through us and conducting the energy of life in the body. The Hebrew word 'breath' (neshima) contains the words 'women' (nashim) and 'soul' (neshama), hence the idea behind the exhibition was to present works by women artists who create and exhibit their art in Israel, where they live. These artists address the feelings and emotions we are now experiencing, and each expresses them in her own, unique way. The works on display were created in a variety of media and include paintings, photographs, video art, and installation. They give the viewer an experience of introspection and awareness of the importance of the spaces in our lives—the spaces between inhalation and exhalation. They invite viewers to gather inside in order to stay for a moment in a calming space—the twilight zone between inhaling air and exhaling it— where meaning is revealed.
