The Man Who Loved Women (L'Homme qui aimait les femmes): Presented by Hervé Le Tellier
In collaboration with the Jerusalem Cinematheque and with the support of the Institut Français Israel
The Writers Festival at the Cinematheque
France | 1977
Dir.: François Truffaut
W.: Charles Denner, Brigitte Fossey, Nelly Borgeaud
119 minutes | French | Hebrew subtitles
The film opens with the protagonist’s funeral, which is only attended by women, and returns to the past to tell the story of a man whose entire purpose in life was to pursue women. Truffaut loves his protagonist for his weaknesses and finds a resemblance between the protagonist's obsessive love and his own pleasure in telling this story.
There will be an opening conversation with French writer Hervé Le Tellier, winner of the 2020 Prix Goncourt. Le Tellier will speak about how this film resonates with the story of his life, his relationship with a "complicated" mother, and a mourning adolescent boy, which, by his own definition, turned him into a young widower.
