There are Other Gods: Yochi Brandes and Alon Hilu in Conversation with Ruth Elbaz
The books of author Yochi Brandes (Israel) are based on sources from various layers of Jewish culture, and her stories are told from unconventional perspectives that empower women’s voices. At the center of her best-selling book Adele (2018) is the story of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism, presented from the point of view of his daughter. In her latest book, When G-d Was Young (2021), Brandes analyzes seven biblical stories and presents G-d as a figure that changes in response to human actions.
Author Alon Hilu's (Israel) books draw much inspiration from local history. In the fictional historical novel The House of Rajani (2008), he describes a chance encounter that takes place in Jaffa in the late nineteenth century between a Jewish agronomist and a Palestinian child suffering from depression. In Murder in the Red House (2018), he describes the period of the bloody events that took place in Israel in the year 1851 and culminated in the murder of author and leader Yosef Haim Brenner and his friends. Brandes and Hilu will talk with journalist and screenwriter Ruth Elbaz about writing historical prose and Jewish sources of inspiration.
