“I do not know if it was the earthly Jerusalem that my eyes saw then; it may have been the heavenly Jerusalem, which dwelt in my heart, and I imagined coming and dwelling in it.”

Pinchas Sadeh came to Jerusalem as a young man, aspiring to study painting at Bezalel. Although he was accepted and even exempted from paying tuition, the high price of the art equipment required for studies deterred him, so he decided to exchange easel and paint for pencil and paper. Sadeh, who spent his days and nights in a small attic in the Geula neighborhood, was captivated by the many faces of Jerusalem, both visible and hidden. The city remained an object of longing for him and inspiration for his writing even after he left it, and at the end of his life he returned to it and was buried in it.

Poet and journalist Nadav Halperin and poet Noa Sorek, who also share a love for words in their home, set out in Sadeh’s footsteps to discover Jerusalem as he memorialized it in his books and poems, from Bezalel Street, through Nachlaot neighborhood, and to Mahane Yehuda.
