What About Justice | Yehuda Mimran in Conversation with Chen Artzi-Sror
In his book Justice from the East (Alliance – Kol Israel Haverim Press), Dr. Yehuda Mimran, a faculty member at the Mandel School for Educational Leadership and one of the founders and leaders of the Tikkun movement—presents a vision of a socially engaged Judaism rooted in Mizrahi traditionalism: communal, moderate, and inclusive. He proposes this as a model that offers a meaningful alternative to what he sees as the limitations of Western liberalism. According to Mimran, liberalism often struggles to provide a sense of belonging, meaning, and justice. At the same time, he critiques views of Judaism either as strictly halakhic or as a purely private matter, and calls for restoring social Judaism to a central place in Israel’s public life.
In conversation with award-winning journalist Chen Artzi-Sror, recipient of the 2024 Israeli Institute for Journalism Award for Excellence in Journalism, Mimran will discuss his new book and consider the possibility of shaping a local Jewish concept of justice, as well as the tensions between tradition, nationalism, and democracy in contemporary Israel.
