A Spirit from Shifting Directions | A Tribute to Dan Pagis, 40 Years After His Death
An original production for the International Writers Festival at Mishkenot Sha’ananim
A multidisciplinary project bringing together text, music, and space, created in collaboration between the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and the Mishkenot Sha’ananim Center for Culture. The performance features students of composition, instrumental performance, vocal studies, and dance, who were invited to a unique residency at Mishkenot Sha’ananim to develop a shared creative process.
The audience is invited to wander through the distinctive spaces of Yael Garden and encounter live ensembles of musicians, singers, and dancers performing in site-specific work based on and inspired by the poetry of Dan Pagis. Like Leah Goldberg, who wrote in 1939 that “the role of poetry is to remind us that we are still human”—especially in times of war—Pagis, too, saw the act of maintaining humanity in the face of darkness as “an art beyond all others.” This perspective feels especially resonant today, and aligns with the festival’s central theme this year: Hope.
