Historian Steven J. Zipperstein (Stanford University) recently published a biography of Philip Roth (1933–2018), one of the most important Jewish-American writers of the 20th century. Based on over 100 interviews and extensive archival research, the book traces Roth’s life from his childhood in Newark to international fame, examining his personal relationships, romantic entanglements, public image, and engagement with Jewish identity. Zipperstein began working on the biography while Roth was still alive, with Roth’s encouragement and direct assistance, including access to materials unavailable to previous biographers.
He will discuss all this and more with novelist Ayelet Gundar-Goshen.
