Oh, Else! Marking 80 Years Since the Death of Else Lasker-Schüler-event 2
A Performance in Collaboration with the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance & Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design
Else Lasker-Schüler (1869–1945) was one of the most significant and influential poets in th German language, as well as a painter, writer, and a central figure in the Expressionist movement. Born in Germany to a Jewish family, she became known for her poetic language, blending mystical visions with autobiographical elements. In 1939, she fled the Nazi regime to Israel, spending her final years in poverty and isolation in Jerusalem.
This commemorative performance is an original production for the Writers Festival, in collaboration with the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
Students of composition, instrumental performance, vocal arts, and dance were invited to
participate in a unique creative residency at Mishkenot Sha’ananim, where they developed an interdisciplinary project merging text, music, and space. The outcome: live ensembles of musicians, singers, and dancers will be spread throughout the unique settings of the Yael Garden, performing a site-specific production of original compositions inspired by Lasker-Schüler’s biblical poetry.
Additionally, the performance will feature an original drawing installation depicting Lasker-Schüler, created by students from the Screen Arts Department at Bezalel.
