Michal Heiman: Punctuation Marks. Exhibition and Talk with curator Dr. Smadar Sheffi

Michal Heiman is a storyteller. She explores the world through a personal and autobiographical lens, carefully observing images, texts, and sound. Spanning photography, painting, installation, video, and performance – Her work has been exhibited extensively internationally and is included in numerous public and private collections worldwide

Over the past decade, Heiman has focused on the writings, actions, and photographs of anonymous, pioneering, and radical women who were institutionalized in 17th–20th-century asylums across Europe and the United States. Her works embed subtle traces of the underlying forces—morals, conventions, and taboos—that shaped the lives of these women. Drawing on diagnostic tools from the fields of psychology and psychiatry, she highlights the interconnections of these herstories to the political and the gendered, exposing the traps that lie at their core. 

In 2023, her exhibition Chronically Linked received the prestigious Gradiva Award for the best works that advance the field of psychoanalysis.

Exhibition talk: Michal Heiman and Smadar Sheffi will discuss the interrelations of image and text, the act of questioning, and the ways in which past, present, and future intertwine in the creative process—a cycle that disrupts linear time and invites a revisiting of both personal and collective memory.
