The Postcard: Anne Berest (France) in Conversation with Dorit Shiloh
Session conducted in English
In “The Postcard” (published in Hebrew by Modan), Anne Berest, French writer, actress and Goncourt Prize nominee, tells the epic tale of her Jewish family’s odyssey through the 20th century – from the upheavals of Bolshevik Russia, through the landscapes of Latvia and Palestine, to the boulevards of contemporary Paris. Tracing the lives of the Rabinowitz family over five generations, Berest recounts their experiences through pogroms, persecution, economic triumphs, property loss, and their eventual immigration to Israel. Among them, five members sought a new beginning in Paris with the hopes of assimilating into French society, only to have four murdered in Auschwitz. The fifth member was Berest's grandmother, Myriam Picabia-Bouveris, who survived the war and passed away in the 1990s.
In conversation with literary scholar and author Dorit Shiloh, Berest will share the discovery of her Jewish heritage, which inspired the book, and the extensive research that informed its
writing.
