Taffy Brodesser-Akner was born into a Haredi family in Brooklyn. She spent a year at Bar-Ilan University, and eventually became a journalist with the New York Times and with the magazine GQ, where she contributed profile articles about celebrities. At the center of her wild and addictive first novel, “Fleishman is in Trouble,” we meet Toby Fleishman, a successful Jewish doctor whose marriage is falling apart and who discovers the wonderful and wide-open world of dating apps and liberated available sex. The novel was almost immediately adapted into a successful television series starring Jesse Eisenberg and Claire Danes, which was broadcast in Israel on the Disney channel. The author, journalist and musician Yuval Ben-Ami (whose song is used in the series) will talk with Brodesser-Akner about monogamy and sex through apps, about her meteoric success, and about the connections between married life, religion and liberated writing.
