The Politics of Comics: Rutu Modan in Conversation with Yuval Avivi

Tuesday 17.5
20:30-21:30
Djanogly Hall, Mishkenot Sha'ananim Cultural Center

Rutu Modan (Israel) is one of the most prominent comics artists of our time. She has published several successful graphic novels, including Exit Wounds (2008) and Property (2013). Her award-winning work has been translated into many languages and received critical acclaim around the world. Her latest book, Tunnels (2020), tells the story of the daughter of a celebrated archaeologist who embarks on a journey, accompanied by her son and an improvised crew, to restore her father’s honor, of which he was robbed by fraudulent means, and to complete his work after he sinks into dementia. As the action takes place around and below the separation fence, it is filled with figures on both sides of the barricade—IDF soldiers, ISIS fighters, settlers, wealthy businessmen, and money-hungry academics—whose paths intersect at the excavation site.

Modan will talk with Yuval Avivi, journalist and presenter of a popular literary podcast, about her unique graphic language and the way in which burning political issues can be raised and addressed through comics.
